Turmeric ‘Golden’ Paste Recipe

According to Dogs Naturally, Turmeric offers a range of benefits to dogs, particularly senior dogs. The anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric help regulate pain associated with osteoarthritis and joint immobility.

Given most senior dogs take ongoing medication, consult with your vet before adding turmeric to your dog’s diet, as it may interfere with some medications.

Benefits of Turmeric for Senior Dogs

  • Anti-inflammatory properties: Reduces arthritis and joint pain.

  • Cancer benefits: Potential aid for dogs with cancer.

  • Gastrointestinal health: Treats disorders like irritable bowel disease.

  • Reduced NSAID need: Decreases reliance on nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Turmeric Paste Recipe

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup organic turmeric powder (available at Coles for around $5 per bag)

  • 1 cup cold filtered water

  • 1 heaped tablespoon organic coconut oil

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Method:

  1. Place turmeric powder and cold water in a small saucepan over medium to low heat.

  2. Whisk until it starts to bubble, then reduce to low heat.

  3. Continue whisking until the mixture thickens to a paste.

  4. Remove from heat and stir in pepper and coconut oil (or MCT oil).

  5. Pour into a jar and allow to cool. Store in the fridge.

Dosage

  • Small dogs: Start with ¼ teaspoon per day.

  • Medium dogs: Start with ½ teaspoon per day.

  • Large dogs: Start with ¾ teaspoon per day.

  • Giant dogs: Start with 1 teaspoon per day.

Turmeric exits the body quickly, so some sources recommend dosing in smaller amounts twice per day. Ensure plenty of fresh filtered water is available, as turmeric may increase thirst.
