As dogs age, the most important thing that you can do for their health is to keep the extra calories off them.

Diet, alongside exercise, supplementation, and complementary therapies will make the world of difference to every dog, no matter their age. The proof is in the pudding, Fletch (featured on this page) is 12 years of age.

Supplementation

The Silver Woof strongly recommends that you speak with your vet before adding any supplements to your dog’s diet.

A few years ago, my fight against Fletch’s arthritis got serious. He went from limping occasionally, usually after a nap, to limping every day. It freaked me out; he was not having a good time, and we were considered frequent flyers at our vet (insert mental image of me making it rain money).

Despite my best efforts to manage his inflammation with diet alone, this disease had me stumped, and it appeared that our only option was daily medication. At one point, he was taking 4-5 prescription drugs per day, depending on his level of discomfort.

I didn’t like the thought of what all that medication was doing to his liver and kidneys. Not to mention the fact he had just been diagnosed with a grade one heart murmur.

Determined to do the best thing for my little man, I embarked on a journey into supplementation research, hoping that alongside good nutrition, it would support a reduced inflammatory response in his body. Then maybe we could cut back on his medication. Maybe.
